UNIVERSITY
Research
The Institute of Naval Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology conducts research in various areas of maritime engineering, integrating experimental testing, computational modeling, and innovative design. Its research covers ship structures, marine power systems, control and automation, hydromechanics, hydroacoustics, marine auxiliary machinery, and subsea robotics, as well as offshore wind power.
In ship structures and technology, the institute focuses on ship design, structural integrity, composite materials, and fatigue analysis. Marine power systems research includes hybrid propulsion, energy recovery, and efficiency optimization. The control systems and automation group works on modelling, simulation, and diagnostics of dynamic ship systems, including turbines and automation. Hydromechanics and hydroacoustics research involves ship hydrodynamics, seakeeping, stability, and noise reduction. Marine auxiliary machinery studies cover anchoring, mooring, steering, propulsion, and offshore renewable energy devices. In subsea robotics, the institute develops autonomous underwater vehicles for military and industrial applications.
The institute has specialized facilities, including a towing tank for resistance, propulsion, and seakeeping tests, and a ship structure and strength laboratory for structural testing and fatigue analysis. The turbine research lab investigates rotor forces and sealing effects, while the automation and robotics lab supports modelling and control system development. The tribology lab focuses on friction, lubrication, and coatings for marine applications. The subsea robotics facilities enable the development and testing of underwater vehicles, including mine destroyers.
With strong industry collaborations, the institute plays a key role in advancing shipbuilding technology, contributing to sustainable maritime engineering and energy efficiency.
