This volume contains the papers presented at the 3rd International Conference on Marine Science and Technology for Environmental Sustainability. The conference was organised by the School of Marine Science and Technology, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, in conjunction with the EU EcoDock and POP&C projects.

This publication represents a series of papers, which were presented at the 39th WEGEMT School entitled Marine Science and Technology for Environmental Sustainability. The event was hosted by the School of Marine Science and Technology, Newcastle University, from 16th to 19th December 2002.

The presented material was contributed by scientists from all over Europe with wide experience in both marine design and formal optimization. Apart from writing and presenting some chapters themselves, the book’s editors – Lothar Birk and Stefan Harries – acted as organizers and secretaries of the summer school OPTIMISTIC. The 39th WEGEMT summer school called OPTIMISTIC – Optimization in Marine Design was held at the Technical University Berlin in May 2003 under the auspices of the European Association of Universities in Marine Technology and Related Sciences (WEGEMT). Their intention was to introduce engineering professionals, scientists and post-graduate students to the methodology and the application-of formal optimization in the field of marine design.

This publication represents a series of lecturers’ papers, which were presented at a five day event entitled Advanced Shipbuilding and Shipping – Competitive Ship Production. The event was hosted by ETSIN, Madrid, from 11th to 15th November 2002. This WEGEMT Summer School is unique in that it is bringing shipbuilding, shipping, ship design and production all together. It should therefore be of significant help to the graduate student by providing them with a holistic view of the marine transportation business rather than a narrowly focused single topic.

The present compendium is the first issue of material intended as a textbook dealing with mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of thermal material processes, especially casting. The aim is to introduce technically related numerical methods in general, especially control volume based difference methods in such a way that the student gains an insight into their formulation and application. An understanding of these aspects is essential before starting the actual technological application of numerical methods or advanced theoretical studies on the subject.

This publication represents a series of lecturers’ papers, which were presented at a five day event entitled Manoeuvring and Manoeuvring Devices. The event was hosted by INSEAN, Rome, from 14th to 18th May 2001.

The conference proceedings refer to the papers presented during the EUROCONFERENCE on Passenger Ship Design, Operation and Safety, the first major event of the Multi-conference. The aim of this conference was to address in depth various contemporary issues related to passenger ship design and construction, operation, economy and safety, taking into account recent regulatory and maritime policy matters affecting both safety and economy of passenger ships. This aim was tackled by ensuring the presence of internationally recognised speakers from the whole spectrum of the passenger ship maritime industry, including maritime regulatory and policy authorities, research and academic institutions.

Design for safety: an integrated approach to safe European RORO ferry design. The strategic obiective of SAFER EURORO TN is to facilitate the development of a formalised design methodology for safer ships by promoting an integrated approach that links behaviour prediction through the utilisation of appropriate technical “tools”, risk assessment deriving from risk-based methodologies for assessing ship safety and disparate design activities and issues.

This publication compiles the papers presented at the 3rd Numerical Towing Tank Symposium that took place in Sweden from the 9th to the 13th of September 2000. The 21st WEGEMT on Ships for Coastal and Inland Waters was organised by the Institute of Ship Technology Duisburg, Germany, in 1994. The School responded to: the increasing global significance of Coastal and Inland Shipping as part of an integrated shipment network; the extension of inland waterways to meet the requirements of sea-going ships in an across the border transportation system; and the official establishment of the Institute of Ship Technology Duisburg (ISD) at the Gerhard-Mercator-Universitit –GH Duisburg 40 years after the training of marine engineers was instituted in Duisburg. An intensive course in the field of vibration, noise and shock on board ships was developed aiming at improving the knowledge and sensitivity to the problems related to these issues, which means not only awareness of the physical phenomena involved, their effects, and possible solutions, but also capability to transmit the related elements of knowledge in the operative environments where the students act or intend to work, in particular within Universities and marine industries. This publication represents a series of lecturers’ notes which were presented at a short course and Workshop entitled “Advanced Design of Ships and Offshore Floating Systems” first presented at the Jury’s Pond Hotel, Glasgow in September 1992. The course was coordinated by The Marine Technology Directorate Limited, and hosted by the University of Glasgow. It was part funded by the EU COMETT Programme through the University Enterprise Training Partnership in Marine Science and Technology (MARTRAIN).

These lecture notes were partly prepared for the IMOT project involving lectures in Panvel, India July 1989, and partly for the WEGEMT School in Trondheim January 1991. The tenth WEGEMT School has been devoted to the important subject of the design and construction of the special vessels collectively known as High Speed Craft, which include patrol boats, motor yachts, surface effect vessels, airfoil craft, &tc. In planning the School Syllabus it was moreover decide to include Pleasure Craft, both wind and power-driven, on the ground that many Shipyards often build more than one of these types of craft.

The present paper is an introduction to the resistance session of the 8th WEGEMT School on Ship Design for Fuel Economy. Its main purpose is to introduce the various components of the total resistance of a ship, i e to explain the physical background of each component, to assess its relative importance and to discuss (very briefly) the possibilities of reducing it. The main emphasis of the paper is placed on the resistance components of a ship moving in calm, unrestricted water.
